It entered the automobile rental business a little late; however, it became successful and seized the interest of one of the largest corporations in the world. Through a series of relationships, the Dollar Rent A Car Company has entered a unique position in the car rental world. With over 650 being located worldwide, they have over 350 Dollar Rent a Car locations in the United States and Canada. The company prides themselves on giving top-notch service, and also being one of the more web savvy businesses in the car rental business.

Avis was almost 20 years older in the rental business than Dollar Rent a Car but the Dollar organization managed to develop its unique marketing techniques (with service levels) that not only attracted commercial and business customers arriving in airports, but desirable to the vacationing visitor as well. The Dollar organization grew rather quickly as they captured the very tail of the rental car wave carrying numerous well known companies to international success. Then they were propelled to a new region of the rental game.

Enter a Detroit Powerhouse
In 1990, the Chrysler Motor Corporation was seeking expansion for its newly formed Pentastar Group. This was formed as a network of rental car companies for both the business and vacation traveler. It was reasoned that consumers should rent Chrysler vehicles, and then they would be more inclined to buy Chrysler cars when it was time to purchase. It was a bright idea, and to make up their new Pentastar Group Chrysler purchased the small companies; Thrifty, General Car Rental, and The Dollar Rent a Car.

Pentastar left Thrifty with its own brand name since it was a recognized brand but General Car Rental was not so lucky. The Dollar Rent a Car was thought to be the predominant brand, so General had to change their names, and/or merge with the Dollar agencies already in place.

Now Dollar Rent a Car is one of the larger car rental companies in the rental game. They offer only Chrysler vehicles. It is a terrific piece of marketing by Chrysler and it ahs paid off again and again.
